Amsterdam has never been short of football history, and a good deal of it belongs to a club whose name is also its motto: Amsterdamsche Football Club Door Wilskracht Sterk — "Amsterdam Football Club Strong Through Willpower". Most people simply say AFC DWS, or just DWS. In 1964 this club did something no other Dutch side has managed before or since, and today it plays on in the amateur leagues of West Amsterdam.

From Fortuna to Door Wilskracht Sterk
The club was founded on 11 October 1907. It did not start life under the name it is known by: it was first called Fortuna, then Hercules, and only in 1909 took the name Door Wilskracht Sterk. The choice was a statement of intent as much as a title — a working-class Amsterdam club that expected to get where it was going through sheer will.
DWS play in blue and black vertical stripes with black shorts, a kit that has followed the club through every era of its long life.
The professional years
Dutch football turned professional in the 1950s, and DWS entered the professional game in 1954. Between 1958 and 1962 the club merged with BVC Amsterdam and competed as DWS/A before reverting to its own name.
Throughout the professional era, from 1928 to 1972, DWS played its home matches at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam — the 1928 Olympic ground, and one of the great stages of Dutch sport.
1964: a championship that has never been repeated
The defining season came in 1964. DWS won the Eredivisie — the Dutch top flight — in their first season after promotion from the Eerste Divisie. No club in the Netherlands has repeated that feat since: coming up and winning the title straight away remains unique to Door Wilskracht Sterk.

The title carried DWS into Europe. In the 1964–65 European Cup, the forerunner of today's Champions League, the club reached the quarter-finals — a remarkable run for a side that had been a division lower two years earlier.
1972: FC Amsterdam, and life after it
In 1972 DWS merged with Blauw-Wit Amsterdam and De Volewijckers to form FC Amsterdam, which took on the professional mantle of all three. DWS itself did not disappear: the club continued as an amateur side, and has done so ever since.
Today AFC DWS plays its football at Sportpark Spieringhorn in Amsterdam. In the 2024–25 season the first team competed in the Saturday Derde Klasse B (West 1), the sixth tier of Dutch amateur football.
